About the city

Twenty-five centuries, one city

Athens wears its history lightly. The Acropolis sits above a city of six million that is loud, warm and entirely of the present.

Below the rock, the old neighbourhoods — Plaka, Monastiraki, Psiri — fold Byzantine churches and Ottoman lanes into a modern capital that eats late and stays up later.

Most visitors never reach the coast. They should: the Athens Riviera runs south for kilometres of swimmable sea, twenty minutes from the ruins.
